To Great Lakes

June 17, 2014
Woke up bright and early. We should have gotten up and done laundry, but we were out of energy last night, so we let it ride. Breakfast was enjoyed. Jim started working on our plan for today, hoping to find an inexpensive hotel in/near Boston. Meanwhile, he was trying to contact his nephew Cam in Boston, and his step-brother Paul in New Jersey. We gave up on a cheap hotel in Boston, and decided to head south just to get as far as possible. Finally left about 1pm. We had lunch at a Chinese restaurant.

We found Sea Vu camp site in Wells, ME. It is a beautiful site with broad view of port, boats, and harbor, as well as RVs and little cabins that looked like small, modern, luxurious, mobile homes. Dinner in Wells, ME, at Fisherman's Catch: Dianne had clam chowder (prize winning; absolutely delicious) and lobster roll. Jim had halibut and pilav. Returned to camp. Had left fly off tent so we could view beautiful night sky, but lights in camp were too bright. Put on fly; lucky we did; rained a little during the night.

Tomorrow we head south to Boston, see some sights, and have dinner with Cam and his sister. Don't know where we'll stay the night, but might head back to Vermont to see Paul, Jim's half brother.

Drove into Boston to spend a day with Jackie and Cam (jim's niece and nephew) in Boston. Jackie had a day off; Cam would meet us about 4:30. Very enjoyable get-together. Ate dinner at Brown Sugar Rest. I had Sizzling Plate:  Enough seafood to enjoy for dinner and take home for two lunches. Everyone enjoyed his/her meal. The walk along the Blueline commuter train system was interesting, both to see Boston folks and the buildings and shops. We had a long conversation about Boston traffic vs pedestrians, who seem to have right of way at every crossing, stoplight or not.A similar law seems to support on-coming traffic at freeways on-ramps. Jim was surprised at the quantity of trash on the streets. It appears no one cleans up. We said a fond goodbye at the end of the evening. We expect to see Cam again in Vermont with his father.
In the dark the exit from Boston was challenging, even with the help of the GPS. Eventually we headed for the Massachusetts shore, where we found an Econo Lodge in Yarmouth. The room was small, but quite comfortable, as was the king-sized bed (we like standard size, but oh, well). It had air con, a roomy refrigerator and a television, all for $59. Best bargain we've had so far.

Stayed at Econo Lodge. Able to do laundry at their laundromat. Over breakfast we met a couple + 2 kids from Hawaii (he was from Edmonds in the Seattle area) . Charming family. Reception staff are from India.
Headed to Cape Cod beach for beautiful views and a stroll in lovely warm water. Jim loved wading in the water. After leaving the beach, we stopped in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, at a Bass Factory Outlet & bought shoes and socks for Dianne.

We set out for our smallest state, Rhode Island, and toured Newport. What a world of contrasts: there were tiny shops crowded together in Newport's small business district; there were enormous, elegant mansions on gigantic grounds; then the Castle Hill Coast Guard Station and lighthouse, Fort Adams State Park, and the Newport Harbor and anchorage jammed with thousands of sailboats. After our lovely tour of Rhode Island, we popped over to Connecticut to stay at Hopeful Pond St Park in Jewett.

Niagara Falls from the American side, Canada to the right.

From the rapids to over the falls. The mass of water makes more of an impression than the height of the falls. There is a LOT of water over these famous falls.

We headed from Niagara to a campground right on Lake Erie.
